The
Mewar festival is a perfect example of the religious and secular
traditions combined in one. Celebrated to mark the advent of the spring
season the Mewar festival coincides with the Gangaur festival, thus a
visitor can ideally enjoy two major festivals of Rajasthan. The festival
is organized in the Hindu month of Chaitra (March-April). Folk singing,
dancing, puppet shows and many other activities keep the visitor
enthralled. During the festival a mosaic of Rajasthani religion and
culture is witnessed .The city of Udaipur livens up with the religious
processions accompanied by the performing arts. The women of Rajasthan wait eagerly for the festival and dress up beautifully in Rajasthani dresses. The women take part in the festival by dressing up the images of Gangaur and Isar and take them to a ceremonial tour of the entire city. Throughout the procession the women keep on singing folk songs in praise of the images. The images are finally taken to the Gangaur ghat at Lake Pichola in a special boat amidst much singing and dancing. After all these religious activities during the day the evenings are marked by colorful cultural programmes. The beautiful fireworks which fill up the sky at night mark the conclusion of the Mewar festival.
