The
city of Lakes Udaipur was founded by Maharaja Udai Singh II in 1568
after the siege of Chittorgarh by Mughal forces. Legend has it that the
King found the city near Lake Pichola after being guided by a holy
saint. But since the city of Udaipur was placed at a strategic position
and was less vulnerable to Mughal attacks owing to being surrounded by
the Aravalli Mountain ranges the city was founded by Maharaja Udai Singh
II. Udaipur served as the historic capital of the kingdom of Mewar for a
long time and witnessed immense development on account of a successful
line of Kings of Mewar. The most chivalrous of Rajput king of Udaipur
was Maharana Pratap whose tales of valor still echo in the city of
Udaipur and beyond. The city of Udaipur withheld many political invasions and hence has numerous tales of history and romance to narrate to a visitor. The City palace and Fateh Prakash palace were the other residences of the royal house of Mewar and are magnificent structures known for their intricate carvings and beautiful paintings. The Kumbhalgarh fort is the unconquered fort of Udaipur and is a symbol of the toughness of the Sisodias of Mewar.
